Addition and remodeling to Residence on Majorca Avenue, Coral Gables, Florida Coral Gables Residential AdditionsThis Coral Gables Residence dates from the 1950's. The clients had a problem. They had had a new baby and her parents were moving from another country to help the couple with taking care of the children. They wanted to add a Family Room and a Master Bedroom Suite for the grandparents. But they did not want a McMansion or an Italian pallazzo. They wanted something simple. In addition, the rear of the house had no real porch or area to sit and watch the children play in the yard. She complained that the house had no Foyer. They also disliked their driveway. Looking at the options on this tight lot, we decided to eliminate the screened porch in order to add a real Foyer and Family Room. A Master Bedroom Suite was added to the rear of the house. We used some wood trellises both on the front and rear as unifying elements to the house. The trellis and elevated terrace functioned quite well for barbeques and watching the children play in the yard. The driveway was designed by creating a series of concrete squares with salt-rock finish. This design allows the grass to grow between the squares. The additions performed the job of updating the house and giving it a fresh more modern look. |
